Police remove diabetes experts from ADA conference for distributing critique of Trump administration

scienceJun 6, 202620255

Police at the American Diabetes Association annual scientific sessions escorted several diabetes researchers, including Kahn and Ryder, out of the convention center after they handed out copies of an editorial in Diabetes Care that criticized the Trump administration's changes to biomedical research and NIH policy. Organizers told the researchers they could no longer attend the meeting and security threatened arrest when they continued distributing the ADA journal editorial. The NIH director canceled a planned speech at the meeting amid the controversy. The incident matters because it involves the removal of physicians distributing a peer-reviewed editorial at a major scientific meeting and highlights tensions over academic freedom and federal research policy.
