World Oceans Day observed, June 8 conservation campaigns and music challenges

natureJun 8, 20263608,632

The United Nations' World Oceans Day was observed on June 8, as conservation groups, scientists and cultural organizations shared resources, photo essays and themed BirdOfTheDay posts to highlight marine species and habitats. Music and community challenges asked participants to post songs that mention the ocean or artists such as Frank Ocean and tracks like Whitney Duncan's "Coming Home To You" and the Beatles' "Octopus's Garden." Scientists and advocates highlighted research and policy needs, noting more than 1.48 million km of undersea fibre-optic cables can serve as seabed sensors and urging governments to ratify the Global Ocean Treaty and designate the Sargasso Sea as a protected marine sanctuary.

A grey heron flies low over a bright green meadow, its long neck stretched forward and legs trailing behind. Sunlight highlights the broad, outstretched wings, revealing detailed feather patterns, while the bird’s sharp orange bill and pale eye stand out against the softly blurred background.

A photo of a spotted sandpiper (Actitis macularius) in breeding plumage standing on seaweed-covered rocks, facing left. It is a very small shorebird with dark spots on white underparts, brown-scaled upperparts, a long orange bill with a dark tip, dark eyes, and yellow-orange legs. The bird is in shade with mounds of dark brown and bright green seaweed visible in the foreground along with a pale sky and tan sunlit hill out of focus in the background.

Danny 'Mastermind' Dunlin was part of the secretive Ocean Crew, they are masterminds at high end theft. And Danny wasn't happy to be photographed by the Paparazzi because he was casing out a new theft location, so he said to take a few snaps and vanish before he makes us vanish. We couldn't believe the trash talk from such a small bird, but knowing he was likely to be backed up by some unsavoury characters we did as we were told for now. Captured at Long Nanny Tern Colony, Northumberland.

a firefly squid hangs out between two hunks of seaweed, and in between the words say "Protect the Ocean with these actions, get politically active to support green solutions, eat a plant-based diet, oppose deep sea mining, talk with community about climate solutions, take public transit and support its expansion, reduce food waste, educate local businesses about sustainable solutions, buy secondhand

A black cormorant taking off from the bay in the foreground and a seagull floating in the background. The cormorant is facing right with its wings wide open and its feet just scraping the water with a little splash coming up. The seagull is facing forward and slightly to the left. Pale blue waves fill the frame.

A Great Black Backed Gull on a carpet of short, green seaweed on the shore. The bird is facing the camera with its right side showing, its head is turned or the left so the left side of its head is visible. The bird is standing in a small rock pool up to its ankles and a drop of water is hanging from its beak. The backlit green seaweed with a single clump of brown seaweed behind the birds head

Seen mid nose-dive, we are looking at the backside of a large brown pelican. The face is turned to the side so we get a good profile look. We see one foot pointed toward the sky just behind the tail feathers. In the background is a man-made island with oil derricks camouflaged with palm trees and bushes.

A Western Gull with a white head, chest and belly, gray wing and tail feathers with white spots, pale pink legs, and a yellow bill with a red spot. The gull was standing on a red-brown sandstone cliff that overlooked the blue waters of the Pacific Ocean. There's a land mass on the left, and a pale yellowish blue sky with dark and light clouds above. Seen at Bodega Head in Bodega Bay, California.

A vibrant photograph of legendary marine biologist and oceanographer Dr. Sylvia Earle (born 1935), renowned for setting deep-sea diving records and founding the global marine conservation initiative Mission Blue. The composition centers around Dr. Earle looking out from a large, circular glass porthole from the Aquarius underwater habitat. Inside the dark interior, Dr. Earle is visible from the chest up. She wears a bright, ocean-blue fleece zip-up jacket and a silver watch on her right wrist. Leaning forward slightly, she rests her chin near her hands with a warm, radiant smile and wide, joyful eyes. Her expression conveys deep wonder and an enduring connection to the marine environment. The heavy, textured circular metallic rim of the window is encrusted with marine growth and provides a stark frame. It separates the dark interior from a dazzling, colorful coral reef ecosystem that completely surrounds it. The external reef is alive with rich textures, showcasing colonies of pink, orange, and green corals alongside sponges. A small, vibrant orange and purple fish swims in the bottom right corner. The lighting focuses softly on Dr. Earle's face, while the brilliant natural light illuminates the surrounding reef. The overall mood is one of profound curiosity, intimacy, and harmony between humanity and nature. The shot stands as a powerful visual testament to Dr. Earle's life's work of bringing the hidden beauty and fragility of the deep ocean to the surface of global awareness.

The illustrations from top to bottom show ocean soundscapes from before the industrial revolution that were largely composed of sounds from geological (geophony) and biological sources (biophony), with minor contributions from human sources (anthrophony), to the present Anthropocene oceans, where anthropogenic noise and reduced biophony owing to the depleted abundance of marine animals and healthy habitats have led to impacts on marine animals.
