Gordon S. Wood, pioneering historian, dies at 92

I was a political science major when I took my first history class with Gordon Wood in the fall of 1987. Soon after that riveting experience, I became a history major and took several more classes with him. RIP to one of our greatest historians.

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Gordon Wood, Pulitzer Prize-winning historian of American Revolution, killed in crash at 92.

We are devastated by the sudden loss of Gordon Wood. Known to many as one of the foremost scholars on the American Revolution, Gordon was also a teacher of generations of students and other historians who, like him, help us better understand who we are as a country and a people.

May Gordon Wood’s memory be a blessing. When my editor pointed out that the early chapters of “The First Tycoon” were missing something big, I went back to Gordon Wood, as well as Joyce Appleby, Bernard Bailyn, Joanne Freeman. Only then did I find the framework for Vanderbilt and Gibbons v. Ogden.
