EU unveils 21st sanctions package targeting Russia

newsJun 9, 2026212,459

The European Commission unveiled its 21st sanctions package against Russia, proposing to target energy, financial services, crypto platforms, trade and fisheries and to expand banking restrictions to up to 90 additional Russian banks. The package freezes the current pricing mechanism for Russian energy imports through the end of 2026 and includes new export controls aimed at depriving Russia's defense industry of critical technologies. The plan also proposes an entry ban for former Russian combatants into the European Union, and if approved by EU member states it would be the largest single expansion of EU banking sanctions since the 2022 invasion, further squeezing Moscow's access to finance and energy revenues.
