BirdOfTheDay, theme 'TheGathering'

natureJun 10, 202646019,735

BirdOfTheDay's prompt 'The Gathering' asks contributors to show flocks, colonies, and communal bird behavior. Today's gallery mixes field photography, sketch studies, and synth art, ranging from wide roost scenes and formation flights to nesting and feeding close-ups. Standouts include a Victoria crowned pigeon preening at a zoo, a mother duck with her ducklings lined up, and a flock of juvenile starlings swirling together; contributors also posted a graphite sparrow study and a synth-art Yellow-breasted Bunting called "Golden Melody." Look for roosting black-headed gulls, gliding American white pelicans, and grey herons hauling nesting branches, and follow #TheGathering to browse or join.

A flock of juvenile starlings erupts into flight above a grassy field beneath a clear blue sky. The young birds, with their soft brown-grey plumage and pale-edged wings, fill the frame in a whirl of movement, flying in different directions as sunlight illuminates their outstretched feathers. The image captures the energy and confusion of a newly formed flock gathering in open countryside.

3 baby Robins, beaks up, wait for their mom in an elaborate nest wedged against a grey brick and wood wall on the right, and on top of a grey drainage pipe. The grey underside of a roof is above them, and a small patch of blurred blue sky and green leaves appears in the bottom left corner.

Two huge white birds with enormous orange beaks are gliding left to right over the surface of a slightly rippled, glassy lake. Their reflections are rippled. The whole scene looks very quiet.

A horned grebe on a very calm prairie marsh. The water is a dark green as it reflects the surrounding spruce trees. There are very few ripples so the grebe has an almost perfect reflection. The horned grebe has a rusty/brown back, rust coloured neck, a black head with a yellow swoosh of feathers on the sides. Those feathers can be fluffed out when they are excited and are their “horns”. It also has a brilliant red eye!

A beautiful female dark-eyed junco standing on a worn wooden fence. She's facing right with her head down. She has a twig and a little leaf in her beak. She has a gray head and wings with a white and tan body and dark eyes. Her beak and legs are a muted pink. The background is a blurred house. It's a pale yellow-green on the left side, then cream and white with a rust strip just above the fence.

Photo by Kort Duce A house wren returns to its nest carrying food for its hatchlings at a nature area in Longmont, Colorado. In this vertical color photograph, a house wren fills the frame, facing the camera with its head turned slightly to its left. It pauses momentarily on a branch that runs diagonally through the image from the lower left toward the center. Clasped tightly in its beak is a flying insect destined for its waiting young. The background is rendered as a soft blur of riparian greenery, with a patch of blue sky behind the bird’s head extending into the upper right portion of the frame. The shallow depth of field isolates the tiny songbird and highlights its determined expression and precious cargo. A beautiful moment frozen in time, the photograph captures the instinctive dedication and quiet devotion of a parent providing for its family.

A photo of a Carolina chickadee (Poecile carolinensis) perched on a stick mounted to the outside of a pale green wooden nest box, holding a small greenish-brown caterpillar in its bill. It has a black cap and bib, brown eyes, bright white cheeks, gray wings and tail, and pale gray-buff underparts. The bird faces left and the nest box entrance hole is visible to the right, and it appears to be making a food delivery. It is a bright, sunny afternoon.
