Somali referee Omar Artan returns home to hero's welcome

sportsJun 10, 20261619

Somali World Cup referee Omar Artan returned to Mogadishu where crowds and government officials greeted him after U.S. authorities denied him entry ahead of the tournament. Artan said he held the right papers and visa but was held and questioned for more than 11 hours at Miami International Airport before being turned away. Somalia’s Ministry of Youth and Sports confirmed the denial, and FIFA faced criticism after the ban. The episode raises questions about U.S. vetting of African officials and could complicate preparations for World Cup officiating teams.
