Scientists filmed a live goblin shark, Mitsukurina owstoni, on a seamount near Jarvis Island, producing the first high-quality in situ footage of the species. The videos, recorded during deep-sea dives in 2019 and 2024, show its elongated snout, flabby body and dramatic jaw extension in natural deep-slope habitat rather than as caught specimens. The recordings provide unprecedented detail on movement, feeding mechanics and habitat preference, giving researchers new data to study this elusive deep-sea predator and refine understanding of deep-ocean ecology.
