David Hockney, the celebrated British painter, died at his home in London on 11 June 2026, aged 88. He rose to international fame for sun-drenched Los Angeles pool paintings such as A Bigger Splash and Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures), the latter selling for $90 million at Christie’s in 2018. Hockney also pioneered digital iPad drawings, produced stage designs and photography, and painted sweeping Yorkshire landscapes like Garrowby Hill. His vivid colors and experiments with perception reshaped contemporary art and influenced generations of painters, photographers and designers.

David Hockney was immensely creative, curious, and generous with his art, inspiring countless artists and viewers over the decades. A British transplant to Los

The Location: The painting captures the highest point in the Yorkshire Wolds, a scenic rural landscape in northern England where Hockney grew up. Personal Context: Hockney returned to Yorkshire from Los Angeles in the late 1990s to visit his ailing mother. Encouraged by a terminally ill friend, he began painting the local surroundings from memory and imagination rather than direct observation. Style and Palette: The artwork features a characteristically vivid, surreal palette. It contrasts cool blue geometric fields in the background with bright, warm, and hyper-saturated red, green, and purple hues in the foreground. Perspective: Hockney uses an elevated horizon line and an unusual multi-perspectival view to give the observer a dynamic sensation of rolling and moving directly through the landscape.

David Hockney painting called 'My Parents' up behind the till in the gallery at Salts Mill, Saltaire. Painted in 1977. Am assuming this is a copy as I think the original is in the Tate in London. Image is a square painting hanging on a warm stone wall with a dark wood shelf below upon which are two tissue rolls and a ticket gun. The painting features a pea-green cabinet in the centre with a vase of tulips on top on the left and a mirror on the right. To the left of the cabinet is a gently smiling lady with white hair and a blue dress looking directly at the camera. On the right of the cabinet is a man in a brown suit engrossed in a catalogue. Their feet rest on a light grey rug in front of the cabinet.

Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) by the artist David Hockney. In the foreground is one end of a pool. A man is swimming below the water. Another man, fully dressed in a bright red/pink blazer, what look like pale jeans, and brown shoes, stand on the tiled edge of the pool and stares down at the swimmer. In the background are shadowy mountains and green, tree-covered hills.

David Hockney’s painting “A Bigger Splash” (1967), depicting the splash (but not the diver who would’ve created it) at the end of a diving board in the backyard swimming pool of a peach-colored mid-century Modernist house with a flat blue sky and palm trees in the background. An appealing but strangely uninhabited image of Southern California’s culture of privatized leisure.
