Gene Shalit, longtime 'Today' movie critic, dies at 100

RIP Gene Shalit (March 25, 1926-June 12, 2026) He voiced a parody of himself (Gene Scallop) on the SpongeBob episode “The Krusty Sponge.”

Gene Shalit, a movie critic and arts reporter for the “Today” show over four decades who was known for his puffy hair, oversized handlebar mustache and affection for groan-inducing puns, has died. He was 100.

Gene Shalit was the first celebrity I ever met. I was a little kid and I spotted him on the street in Boston. He gave me his autograph and was very jovial. I was so chuffed to have met someone I had seen on television, and he seemed happy to be recognized.

Gene Shalit (along with his absurd taste in film and fashion) was one in a million. Of TERROR TRAIN, he said “You’d be off the rails if you don’t choo-choose this loco-motion picture”, yet he called DAWN OF THE DEAD “Yawn of the living” and famously loathed THE SHINING. RIP, king of the dad jokes.

Gene Shalit was, of course, a prolific and razor-sharp film critic whose eccentricity made him a staple for several generations of cinema fans. I also think his self-effacing sense of humor was notable, including his participation in SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS as a parody of himself: Gene Scallop. #RIP

With man as visible as Gene Shalit, you'd think you'd know everything about him but no.
