Jane Fonda will host Rise Up, Sing Out: A Concert for the First Amendment on Sunday, June 14 at 7:30 p.m. Eastern at The Town Hall in New York City, with performances by Bette Midler, Patti Smith, Lily Gladstone, Rufus Wainwright, Joy Reid, Sasha Allen and the Broadway Inspirational Voices. Organizers from the No Kings coalition and the Committee for the First Amendment are calling the one night only concert a nationwide day of protest opposing rising fascism and have scheduled local rallies and watch parties, including a Penobscot River Bridge rally from 5 to 6 p.m. and community watch parties before the show. The event will be live streamed for remote viewers, run about 90 minutes, and matters because high-profile artists and civil liberties groups are using music and public gatherings to spotlight and mobilize around First Amendment rights.
