The Secret Agent, Criterion Collection 4K release announced

The Criterion Collection will release Kleber Mendonça Filho's The Secret Agent on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray in the United States on September 22, 2025. The physical release includes the director's documentary Pictures of Ghosts as a bonus feature. Mendonça Filho's film is a kaleidoscopic period thriller that links everyday life to Brazil's twentieth-century military rule with kinetic action and elegiac historical sweep. The 4K edition and added materials make this acclaimed contemporary Brazilian film more accessible to international cinephiles and collectors.

Finally watched The Secret Agent and why did nobody tell me that it’s an Actually Good version of One Battle After Another, with characters I will always remember instead of instantly resenting, resonance with the world we actually live in, and a rare depth of human depiction instead of caricature?

That it does this while being a love letter — with real questions — to a specific time & place is all the more remarkable. Because it succeeds in both and they are intertwined. Race as a thing that has real meaning but does not define, repression and sex as an outlet against that repression, etc

The Criterion Channel has a collection called “Alex Cox’s Punk Provocations” and a Courtney Love collection but they don’t have “Sid & Nancy.” I think this is a negative-space way to recommend the movie, a Robert Longo thing. You have to pay attention to the movies they don’t stream.

I'm watching "Wild at Heart" for the first time, tonight. I think I was a freshman in high school when it came out. I can't help but think that Quentin Tarantino stole the plot of this movie to write "True Romance." I'll be looking forward to the Criterion Collection putting WaH in 4k.
