Rex Heuermann, a 62-year-old former Long Island architect, was sentenced Wednesday to life in prison without parole after admitting to the Gilgo Beach serial murders. Heuermann pleaded guilty in April to strangling eight women, many of them sex workers, dismembering some victims and dumping remains along a parkway near Gilgo Beach, in killings prosecutors say spanned from 1993 through 2010. Judge Timothy Mazzei imposed multiple life terms and told Heuermann "You're a disgusting, small man," as relatives delivered impact statements and described years of loss. The sentence resolves a decades-long mystery, underscores vulnerabilities faced by sex workers, and delivers legal closure to families who pursued answers for more than 30 years.
