Robert 'Bobby' Prince, the composer whose music shaped Wolfenstein 3D, DOOM and numerous 1990s PC shooters, has died at 81. Prince wrote the MIDI and AdLib scores and created sound design for Commander Keen, Rise of the Triad, Duke Nukem II and Duke Nukem 3D, and his DOOM and DOOM II soundtracks received official releases this year. Signature cues from his work, including driving DOOM themes, became staples for players and modders and were widely imitated in later games. His music helped define the metal-inflected, high-energy sound of early first-person shooters, leaving a lasting influence on game audio and contemporary composers.

RIP Bobby Prince. His music legacy will live on, making inspired music for Commander Keen, Wolfenstein 3D, DOOM, countless others. A true legend. And such a nice man, great musician, wonderful, fun-loving man, nothing but happy memories of him. A loss to the world.

Tragic to hear. I really love this video of him showing off some of his music for Keen and miming out the beats of dialogue. youtu.be/tkCPK2m7D-8?...

Wanted to give my condolences to Bobby Prince. Running from Evil is my favorite song in the entire doom franchise. This song has gotten me out of tough moments as well as the covers. Thank you, Bobby Prince, for making such amazing music. Rest in peace. youtu.be/qURei6svd90?...

I heard today. So incredibly sad. We weren't friends or anything, but I was happy enough to meet Bobby a couple of times and talk game music. Phenomenal human being. As you say, a loss to the world.

RIP. Commander Keen 4-6 were the first games I ever played on my PC with proper background music on my new soundblaster that I begged my parents to buy me as a combined christmas + birthday present. I liked the music so much I recorded it on a cassette tape so I could listen to it outside the game

Rest in peace Bobby. Thank you for the amazing music you brought to our early days of gaming. None of the games would've been the same without it.
