Bobby Prince, composer for DOOM and Wolfenstein, dies at 81
RIP Bobby Prince. His music legacy will live on, making inspired music for Commander Keen, Wolfenstein 3D, DOOM, countless others. A true legend. And such a nice man, great musician, wonderful, fun-loving man, nothing but happy memories of him. A loss to the world.
Tragic to hear. I really love this video of him showing off some of his music for Keen and miming out the beats of dialogue. youtu.be/tkCPK2m7D-8?...
Wanted to give my condolences to Bobby Prince. Running from Evil is my favorite song in the entire doom franchise. This song has gotten me out of tough moments as well as the covers. Thank you, Bobby Prince, for making such amazing music. Rest in peace. youtu.be/qURei6svd90?...
RIP. Commander Keen 4-6 were the first games I ever played on my PC with proper background music on my new soundblaster that I begged my parents to buy me as a combined christmas + birthday present. I liked the music so much I recorded it on a cassette tape so I could listen to it outside the game
I'm glad I heard from you first about this. Bobby was why I got into music at all.
I heard today. So incredibly sad. We weren't friends or anything, but I was happy enough to meet Bobby a couple of times and talk game music. Phenomenal human being. As you say, a loss to the world.
People don't realize how prolific this dude was. Aside from the big names like Doom and Duke Nukem and Commander Keen, we have him to thank for the rockin tunes in Pickle Wars and Blake Stone and Major Stryker.
this was probably my favorite Bob Prince track that wasn't in Doom or Doom2 www.youtube.com/watch?v=XN6y...
i guess this is the way i find out. that’s rough, man. truly a horrible loss.
Rest in peace Bobby. Thank you for the amazing music you brought to our early days of gaming. None of the games would've been the same without it.
May God Rest His Soul.
He only kept improving with the years too. You can hear a clear evolution in his style from Wolfenstein 3D to Doom. His compositions got consistently better. ROTT was on a whole other level too.
A significant loss for the gaming world. Thanks to his contributions to Commander Keen, Wolfenstein 3D, and DOOM, the music from those games is so deeply ingrained in our culture today. My condolences to his family and friends.
Nooo 😔 So sad. I'm such a big fan from his work. Since Commander Keen. Rest in peace Legend 🙏
And just after Doom's music got added to the Library of Congress too. that sucks But at least his Tunes will ensure he is remembered.
youtu.be/6WCx9imPJK0 Lemon Demon (Neil Cicierega)’s phenomenal 2005 album ends with some KEEN gameplay, and in the commentary Neil says ’god bless you Robert Prince’ (my feelings too) Go to 59:50
this one really hurts :((((( rest in peace maestro youtu.be/hhQw6NFxu0E
E1M1 on repeat in my head since seeing the news. About to fire Doom up for a play-through. Something tells me he loved his metal. RIP Bobby, thanks for the atmosphere in so many classic games 🤘
What a picture. It has such exuberant "regular guy in a regular room, doing extraordinary things" vibes. What a legend. Rest in peace.
Oh no, his music defined my formative years - together with Hülsbeck and Rob Hubbard. All I can say is thank you for everything.
Rest in peace, Bobby. Your music was a big part of the games we played.
I enjoyed Bobby Prince's music immensely in games back in the day, even though I was probably too young then to say why games with his music were just that little bit cooler. Instantly recognizable, catchy compositions, jamming tunes. Make 'em tap their feet wherever you are now, Mr Prince. 🎶
So sorry for your - and all of our - loss. ❤️
His music for DOOM was so iconic, that this year it was added to the Library of Congress's National Recording Registry. It's the third video game soundtrack to be included, after the Super Mario Bros. Theme (which was the first) and Minecraft: Volume Alpha (the second).
Damn, that's sad. Basically the soundtrack to my childhood
i'm so happy he lived to see his DOOM OST enshrined in the Library of Congress rest well, Bobby
RIP Bobby Prince. this 1993 clip of him explaining the Commander Keen menu music is amazing. worth a watch even if you don't give a rip about Keen. source link below.
This and Angelo Badalamenti explaining how he wrote Laura Palmer's theme are two of my favourite musician explains their process clips ever
the commander keen music was so good, I've legitimately had this tune in my head for about 35 years now
Yeah, he’s talking about Keen Dreams! Makes a whole lot of sense considering the vegetables theme of that game Then the song got cut and they used it for the Well of Wishes instead Man I loved his Commander Keen music, so full of personality
I kind of miss the days when Commander Keen was one of like five video games I would name if prompted to list video games I've played.
His music was such a memorable part of my childhood and young adult life - this sucks Hearing him talk about his process like this is fun, because my wife is a composer and this is exactly how she sounds, enthusiasm and all, talking about her work
Thanks for sharing this - I loved those games.
Farewell, Bobby Prince. Thank you for creating the tunes to one of our most beloved computer games ever
HE DIED??? rest in peace, truly a legend and creator of banger after banger
"Waiting for Romeo to play" is now playing.
Coincidentally, I was just playing the recent Doom games for Doom '16 ten year anniversary and the original two just to boot. Now I'm gonna finish the whole series for Bobby.
It appears that Bobby Prince has died. Doom - Quake - Rise of the Triad - Duke Nukem. So SO many more. I can say this is someone who composed a song just for me. Not many people can say that. Dude's a legend. RIP my old friend. www.legacy.com/legacy/rober...
I just realized that I made a major mistake - Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails did Quake, not Bobby. That's my bad. Posted that in such a hurry last night when I found out about Bobby that I didn't notice my own mistake. Oops.
If you never saw it, check out this video I posted to Youtube 17 years ago of Bobby Prince "singing" the lyrics to a piece of music written for Keen Dreams ( but used in Keen IV - the Dopefish level): www.youtube.com/watch?v=9w3y...
Horrible news. Prince was an incredible composer who wrote some of the most iconic pieces of work in his field. He got a lot of flak for being a "ripoff artist" but that couldn't be further from the truth. May he find piece and warmth beyond.
Responsible for some of the best video game music ever composed, and much more besides. Sad to hear of his passing.
We owe so much to him, so many great soundtracks 🫡
An incalculable loss. May his memory be a blessing.
RIP to Bobby Prince, please forgive me for the time I set up my SC-155 wrong and tried to play Doom and got whatever the hell this is
you changed the soundscape/soundfont to wingdings
it's a tribute to him that this still goes hard
It reminds me of Torgo's theme from Manos: The Hands of Fate
I have E1M1 play when my drone boots up! RIP
look at how she massacred my boy
