James Burrows, 'Cheers' co-creator, dies at 85
James Burrows died June 19, 2026, at age 85; the Emmy-winning director co-created Cheers and directed more than 1,000 sitcom episodes, including The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Taxi, Friends, Frasier, Will and Grace and The Big Bang Theory. He won multiple Emmys over a five-decade career and frequently directed pilots and live-studio episodes that launched long-running series. Burrows's talent for comic timing, ensemble staging and small actor beats reshaped the multi-camera sitcom, making his death a major loss for American television comedy.
Also called the "Steven Spielberg of sitcoms" James Burrows, the creator of “Cheers” who directed more than 1,000 episodes of that show and other classics like “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” ”Will & Grace," “Friends,” and “The Big Bang Theory,” has died. He was 85. www.nbcnews.com/pop-culture/...
James Burrows directed 240 of the 275 episodes of Cheers. That, in itself, is enough to make him an immortal in my pantheon.
Another great creator of awesome television who will be sadly missed. Thank you James for all the awesome shows through the years!
Losing all but the one we want to see ...
Oh wow 😞 He was a sitcom genius
He made me smile often! Thanks!
Well being from Boston we had a special tie to Cheers. Just a great show.
this was so sad to see 💔 I swear
If you saw his name on it, it was good.
I really loved hearing his laugh on episodes of Cheers
So sad to hear. My wife bought me his book which is a great read. He is the goat of tv directing. I would watch shows specifically if he was the director
Burrows spent his career behind the camera specializing in situation comedies. Few viewers recognized him or knew his name, other than to see it flash quickly on the screen in the opening credits. But they knew his work. n.pr/3SR5mla
At one time, he was responsible for most of the favorite shows on television. His brilliance will be missed!
RIP Mr Burrows, thanks for the laughs
Or recognized the wonderfully pithy comments on the vanity card at the end of each Big Bang show….
💔😓 I loved watching many of his sitcoms.
