Hydrogen peroxide used in Lincoln Reflecting Pool, repainting hit
Park staff poured concentrated hydrogen peroxide into the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington to kill a thick green algae bloom. Blue paint applied during the $13 million renovation overseen by President Donald Trump is flaking from the pool surface, and the numbers "86 47" have reappeared on the adjacent lawn as the paint wore away. Park crews report paint and chemical runoff damaged nearby grass and have begun partially draining and retreating the 6.75 million-gallon pool. The visible algae, peeling paint and turf damage cast doubt on the renovation's durability, contractor choices and the risks of using strong oxidizers at a high-profile historic site.

The reflecting pool literally crumbling because of the hydrogen peroxide being poured in to address the algae problem the paint was “supposed” to solve (14 million dollar slush fund aside) is such a delightful microcosm of the state of the republic at large.
