TCM Party watches Paper Moon

Turner Classic Movies is hosting a #TCMParty watch-along of Paper Moon (1973) tonight in its Two-for-One block curated by Colman Domingo, airing at 10:00 PM ET with a 1 hour 42 minute runtime. Peter Bogdanovich directed the film, which stars Ryan O'Neal, Tatum O'Neal, and Madeline Kahn, and follows a fraudulent Bible salesman who reluctantly adopts a tough little girl who may be his daughter. Laszlo Kovacs' period cinematography and Tatum O'Neal's Academy Award-winning turn at age 10 helped make Paper Moon a landmark 1970s comedy-drama, so tonight's screening is an easy chance for new viewers to see the film that launched her career.

I always think the Code would have benefitted immensely from allowing one violation per film, or maybe some kind of penalty fee system. Instead of being predictably safe, you'd never know which film would jump the line or how.

As a wayward youth, I read Joe David Brown's book of #PaperMoon (originally titled "Addie Pray") numerous times. It is written quite charmingly in the first person from Addie's perspective and details many more cons than in the movie, so I always saw the film as a bit of a letdown. 🤷‍♂️ #TCMParty

Which is not to say that the film is bad- it is a pretty faithful adaptation of the book and the casting is excellent- the O’Neals are perfect and Madeleine Kahn absolutely IS Tricia Delight- but it’s only about half of the book and I wanted to see the whole thing! #PaperMoon #TCMParty
