National Indigenous Peoples Day, Canada marks 30th anniversary on solstice
Canada marked the 30th National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21, 2026, with ceremonies and cultural events held nationwide from Ottawa to Vancouver Island. Events included a morning sacred-fire ceremony in Biidaasige Park, a Heritage Park celebration in Calgary where Minister of Indigenous Relations Rajan Sawhney spoke, and the Prime Minister touring an exhibition in Victoria. The holiday falls on the summer solstice, a day of deep cultural and spiritual significance for many First Nations, Inuit and Métis, and was first proclaimed as National Aboriginal Day in 1996 by Governor General Roméo LeBlanc. Programming across the country emphasized language revitalization, music and art performances, educational programming and ceremonies to celebrate resilience and promote reconciliation.
