Ray Davies turns 82, fans celebrate the Kinks songwriter

musicJun 21, 202632727

Ray Davies turned 82 on June 21; he was born June 21, 1944 in Fortis Green, London and is the founder, lead vocalist and principal songwriter of The Kinks. Admirers marked the birthday by sharing Kinks classics and rarities, including Waterloo Sunset, Lola, Sunny Afternoon, Dedicated Follower of Fashion, Dead End Street, Autumn Almanac, and solo songs such as Better Things, and by circulating live and archival performances like a 1973 live take of Waterloo Sunset. Davies once flew back to London to overdub a word on Lola after broadcasters refused to play the single over a perceived Coca-Cola reference, and the Kinks' 1965 U.S. tour ban helped cement the distinctively English voice in his writing. Davies' wry, observational songs have shaped British rock storytelling and influenced artists from Paul Weller to U.S. power-pop writers, keeping his work culturally relevant at 82.

Greatest British songwriter of all time IMO. I could list a lot of songs but I'll just say my favorite thing he wrote is probably "Victoria".
