Peter Murrell, former SNP chief executive and husband of ex-first minister Nicola Sturgeon, was jailed for five years and three months after admitting he embezzled £400,310.65 from the Scottish National Party over roughly 12 years. Murrell pleaded guilty to diverting party funds to buy a range of luxury and mundane items, which BBC Scotland catalogued including Mont Blanc pens, a robot lawnmower and a silver wine coaster. Lord Young said Murrell committed a calculated breach of trust, and the conviction has prompted calls, including a Holyrood motion from Labour MSP Anas Sarwar, for a formal inquiry into SNP finances to restore public trust.
