Alan Greenspan died on June 22, 2026, at age 100 from complications of Parkinson's disease. Greenspan led the Federal Reserve from 1987 to 2006 and emerged as a leading architect of modern U.S. monetary policy. He championed deregulatory policies, was influenced by Ayn Rand, coined the phrase "irrational exuberance", and later acknowledged he had been wrong to assume banks would protect themselves. Those policies and admissions are cited as contributing factors to the 2008 financial crisis and continue to shape debates at the Fed over financial stability, inequality, and bank regulation.
