Mick Fleetwood celebrates 79th birthday

musicJun 24, 2026342,503

Mick Fleetwood, co-founder and drummer of Fleetwood Mac, turns 79 today; he was born June 24, 1947, in Redruth, Cornwall, England. He launched his professional career with the Cheynes in 1963 and anchored Fleetwood Mac through major lineup changes across decades. Fleetwood helped create landmark records including Rumours, one of the best-selling albums ever, and is known for his tall presence and driving blues-rock rhythms. At 79 he remains a living link to the band's 1960s British blues origins and to a career that helped shape rock across generations.

All the Peter Green stuff is great! He’s a criminally underrated guitar player. To my mind, the best of the British blues guys, along with Beck.

Man Of the World Dragonfly Need Your Love So Bad Black Magic Woman Tusk Landslide Albatross Werewolves of London (he and John McVie played session) The Chain Don't Stop

Mary is Merry-ish12

I love old school albums, like Bare Trees and Future Games. Black Magic Woman is a good one, and I love Hypnotized. Hard to pick one. Oh, Well. 😃

Can you really say you skipped any Fleetwood Mac songs? Their catalog is ridiculously strong. Some of my picks are "The Chain," "Go Your Own Way," "Gypsy," "You Make Loving Fun," "Silver Springs," "Rhiannon," "Dreams," "Landslide," "Black Magic Woman," "Tusk," "Sara," and "Never Going Back Again."

His best drum song IMHO was Tusk. A great rhythmic drummer. Solid

Algux (I write stuff)9

The Chain (rather obviously) but I like Albatross coz it's kinda mellow

Pretty much anything from the Peter Green era - y'know, the *real* Fleetwood Mac.

Mick is an amazing percussionist who enjoys being behind a kit and playing his ass off.

Tusk, in its entirety, with the pauses, as Lindsey Buckingham intended it to be heard.

Riannon & You make loving fun,McVee had a great voice

Dr. Kimm5

The Fleetwood Mac Live album is superior music to their studio projects. I think because Mick really lays down a better beat on stage. That and the drugs.

REDRUTH, in CORNWALL, take that crappy English flag away. Where's the CORNISH, St PIRANS FLAG? Redruth is Cornish, not English! Facts matter!

All of them. All of the songs. And Peter Green was such a talented man too.

George Balbona4

Mick rocks on this song, but you barely see him in the video. Oh Well!!! youtu.be/eVrN2E4VHzQ?...

After 49 years, I still never tire of listening to one of my all-time favorite albums. Rumours, without a doubt the album I've listened to and savored the most, even today.

UncleTifa2

My fave song, which Mick comes through loudly and clearly, is a Christine McVie number on Penguin, before they became mega famous: “Dissatisfied” Check it out

Alex2

I was fortunate to meet Mick with my brother Ron Thompson who played with Mick on albums and tours. Loves his sushi easy person to talk to. We had long conversations about Peter Green.

imar07.bsky.social2

I’ve no idea what his favourite songs are to be honest

Watchdog Progressive2

One of the greatest drummers in rock n' roll history. Saw Fleetwood Mac in the late 60s, early 70, late 70s, etc. He was as exciting as the rest of the band with his powerful style. #MickFleetwood #BTD

His fills on Little Lies have always fascinated me. Energizing and elegant, they claim their space then hand it over to the vocals perfectly

Neil White2

His greatest acheivement was not ruining The Running Man with his acting. Oh, and the answer is The Chain

Avadi 🌀(DebraLittle)2

Always marched to the beat of his own drum. A true original.

after many lineup changes & a few albums, the band, Fleetwood Mac, moved to the US where Stevie & Buckingham joined them. Fleetwood Mac has sold over 120 million records worldwide, released 18 studio albums, and they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998.

Mike Lowe15

I loved everything Fleetwood Mac produced prior to Buckingham Nicks joining the band. Kudos to Buckingham Nicks for making Fleetwood Mac a commercial success which the band certainly deserved, but pop music isn't my cup of tea. The real Fleetwood Mac. youtu.be/t9MvfR3HXEA?...

One of the deepest catalogs in music history. So many great songs to choose from, but today "The Chain" gets the nod. This song never gets old. youtu.be/kBYHwH1Vb-c?...

Their Rumors albums often keeps me company when I drive. It’s never gotten old.

I'd have to say Rumours.

Der letzte Simianer7

“Songbird,” sung by the wonderful Christine MacVie, who passed away far too soon, is one of the very best songs ever written and performed.

Pat6

I have 2. Rumours and Tango in the Night.

Redondo Dave5

Fleetwood Mac. Such a fresh new sound. Christine McVie’s “Over My Head” is still my favorite.

So many great Fleetwood Mac songs

Radbird 🦋3

In HS when Then Play On came out & it captivated me. In college Future Games, Bare Trees & Mystery To Me were my favs so I will highlight those. The Rumours era threw me at first-sounded like pop more than rock-but over time became an integral part of my library. Always been a big Christine fan ❤️

CoachKK3

Rumours SS I saw that tour 🎵

Hillbilly Haberdasher3

For me, it’s a tossed up between MR WONDERFUL & ENGLISH ROSE. not only are they superb albums, Mick sure makes great pics for the covers.

Captain CV3

The Dance It's live, it's awesome, and it has so many great tunes from many of their albums.
