Carlo Rovelli warns of 'Edge of Armageddon' in new book
In Edge of Armageddon and a Guardian interview, theoretical physicist Carlo Rovelli warns the world is edging closer to nuclear catastrophe, saying current leaders "chronically lack the nous of Kennedy." Rovelli attributes the heightened danger to renewed great-power tensions and the modernization of nuclear arsenals, which he says increase the risk of miscalculation and accidental escalation. He revisits Cold War near-misses to show how existing command-and-control vulnerabilities could make a single error catastrophic. The book is framed as an urgent call to revive concrete arms-control diplomacy and public pressure to avert that outcome.
Edge of Armageddon: why does one of the world’s top thinkers believe we’re nearing nuclear apocalypse?
answer: he thinks we haven't appeased enough
i heard another expert (ira helfand) talk about this on the radio a few months back, when the us/russia treaty was lapsing. scary stuff. he said that even a "small" nuclear war between pakistan and india would kill 1/4 of all human life (100m immediately and ~2 billion via famine in the aftermath).
BS. Russia gets bombed by Ukraine because it started a war of aggression against Ukraine, regardless of its nukes. Nukes are a deterrent against a nuke-attack, i.e. Mutually Assured Destruction. Russia would never nuke the UK, due to MAD. One-sided nukes against Ukraine would not lead to apocalypse.
Why? Because we have not made it to destroy nuclear weapons. What it's also worrisome are insane autocrats with nuclear codes.
