U.S. PCE inflation rose 4.1 percent year over year in May, while core PCE climbed to 3.4 percent year over year, the highest core reading since October 2023. The PCE price index increased 0.4 percent month over month in May and core PCE rose 0.3 percent month over month; personal income increased $181.6 billion, or 0.7 percent, and personal spending also rose 0.7 percent. The hotter core reading raises pressure on the Federal Reserve to keep policy rates elevated and pushes market expectations for a higher terminal federal funds rate ahead of the next FOMC meeting.
