Ann Blyth dies at 98, Oscar‑nominated for Mildred Pierce
Ann Blyth, an actress-singer who was one of the last surviving stars of the Golden Age of Hollywood, died Wednesday at the age of 98.
She started her career as a child on the radio and participated in the New York Children’s Opera Company before moving on to Broadway for a role in Lillian Hellman’s play “Watch on the Rhine” in 1941.
Ah, yes, that slap scene in Mildred Pierce ... she TKO'd Joan Crawford a good one.
She was great in “Mildred Pierce. Really held her own acting with Joan Crawford.
Rest in peace, Ann Blyth.
So many people here have no idea who she was. At my age it’s really sobering.
Wow! She was one of the greats. May she rest in peace and power.
Ann Blyth has died at 98. She received a Supporting Actress nomination 81 (!!) years ago for her completely delicious performance as Joan Crawford's wicked daughter Veda in Mildred Pierce. Man, does that performance hold up. Enjoy 3:00 of immorality and immortality. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zs1J...
A little Oscar trivia for you: I'm not certain, but I believe that Ann Blyth was the last living person to receive a nomination in any category during the 1940s. So...lights out on a decade.
Played that clip just now near my husband. Who said after it ended, with great admiration, "Wow, which one is that?" ❤️ Like you said, it holds up. All of it.
There’s a #TCMParty watch group that uses a Veda scale whenever someone gets slapped in a movie.
That "Oh, grow up!" needs to be a GIF.
Sooooooo good. Crawford's shoulder pads: sooooo wide.
Agreed! It was a thrill to be in attendance at the Castro Theatre years ago and listen to Ms. Blyth during a Q&A post screening of MP🤩
Farewell to Ann Blyth (1927-2026) who was a force of nature as a death row diva in Douglas Sirk’s THUNDER ON THE HILL (1951). She'll be remembered for her Oscar-nominated role opposite Joan Crawford in MILDRED PIERCE (1945), but her talents were vast and varied. #FilmSky #TCMParty
And also for her iconic Hostess commercials.
This is such sad news. Blyth's "Veda" was the noir character you loved to hate - which tells you all you need to know about just how good she was in the role. As stated, she exceled in other roles (I loved her in "A Woman's Vengeance") and she had great rapport with TCM over the yrs. #TCMParty
I also loved her as Burt Lancaster's tragic love interest in Brute Force, and of course, as the legendary Queen of the Nile in the Twilight Zone.
I’m so sad to hear this.
So sorry to hear this
RIP to a multi-talented lady 🤩 Excellent in MILDRED PIERCE. Blyth also had a beautiful singing voice which was highlighted in KISMET (1955) directed by Vincent Minnelli for MGM. youtu.be/3_DU9kvJmww?...
One of the best thrills I had at #TCMFF 2013 was seeing the wonderful Ann Blyth on the red carpet, and introducing MILDRED PIERCE with Robert Osborne to a caffeinated mostly gay audience at the Egyptian. She was lovely, funny, warm and an absolute delight. A beautiful lady. #RIP #TCMParty
The audience (playfully) booed when Robert introduced her, and she adored the joke and went along with it. Later, Robert suggested a sequel covering Veda’s life in “the slammer”. #TCMParty
She was 85 and so beautiful still. I've never been to TCMFF but that's the one I'd pick if I could time-travel.
