Springer Nature retracts two Max Planck papers

scienceJun 26, 202621152

Springer Nature has retracted two studies by Max Planck, removing papers originally published about 70 years ago. Science reported that one paper was withdrawn for a claimed copyright violation involving material now in the public domain. Reporting and sample posts say the removals appear to have been triggered by a misbehaving unsupervised algorithm that mistook historical republication practices for misconduct. Editors were reportedly not notified before the removals. Despite the retractions, Springer Nature continued to offer an empty PDF version of the article for sale at $39.95. Science framed the episode as evidence that automated integrity tools need human oversight to avoid erasing historical literature.
