Former national security adviser John Bolton pleaded guilty Friday to a single federal count of illegally retaining or mishandling national defense/classified information. Bolton told a Maryland federal court he was sorry, and prosecutors said he showed classified material, including diary entries, to his wife and daughter who did not have clearances. The plea deal covers one of the originally filed counts and includes a $2.25 million fine, potential forfeiture of his federal pension, and exposure to up to five years in prison; a judge is not bound to accept the deal. Bolton served as President Donald Trump’s national security adviser and later became a critic of Trump; Bolton’s lawyer highlighted differences between Bolton’s treatment and the government’s handling of classified-material cases involving Trump. The Department of Justice announced the guilty plea in a news release Friday.
