Belgium beats New Zealand 5-1, World Cup Group C

Belgium routed New Zealand 5-1 at BC Place in Group C. Leandro Trossard scored a brace and Kevin De Bruyne netted what samples identify as Belgium's first goal of the 2026 World Cup. New Zealand's Elijah Just pulled one back to make it 3-1 before Belgium added a fourth and a fifth to finish 5-1. The win sent Belgium through to the next round of the tournament and eliminated New Zealand from progression.

Until this year, Africa (54 countries) always had the most brutal World Cup qualifying process with only 5 countries qualifying each year. In contrast, Europe through UEFA (31 countries) had 14 slots. Rather than redistribute more fairly FIFA simply added more teams but already you see a difference.

Long ball to Chris Wood is never going to be enough against decent teams though. He simply doesn’t have enough support up front.
