Gallego’s Use of Campaign Funds for Family Trips Prompts Scrutiny

The New York Times reported that Sen. Ruben Gallego repeatedly charged campaign funds to fly his wife, his children and an au pair to vacation destinations where he said he held fundraisers. The Justice Department is reviewing those payments as potential campaign finance violations. Separately, the Senate Ethics Committee dismissed an ethics complaint filed by Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, saying it did not find evidence that Gallego violated federal law, Senate rules or related standards of conduct. Gallego and his spokesperson have framed the Justice Department inquiry as political targeting by the Trump administration. Reporting also says a lawyer for Gallego quietly set up a nonprofit that can raise unlimited funds, a move that advisers and others flagged as raising potential campaign finance concerns. The DOJ review is the immediate next development and could lead to further inquiries depending on what investigators find.
