The Onion debuted a parody of Alex Jones' Infowars on its website and pledged to send $100,000 from merchandise sales to the families of Sandy Hook Elementary School victims. The launch included a YouTube live premiere featuring comedian Tim Heidecker impersonating Jones and a site note that said, "Today we reclaim the standard of truth and deliver the first salvo in the final battle for your mind." CEO Ben Collins said The Onion is still in court trying to take control of Infowars and that staff spoke with Sandy Hook families, who were initially skeptical but supported using Infowars' style and branding to mock Jones. The parody will run shows and spoof Infowars-style content and ads, including intentionally absurd items and fake supplements, while Collins framed the effort as denying Jones any future profit from the brand. Legal judgments have ordered Jones to pay more than $1 billion for falsely calling the 2012 shooting a hoax, and his Infowars operation was broken apart after those rulings; families' attorneys say every dime Jones now makes will be claimed by the victims' families.
