UK agency uncovers international network of drug‑facilitated rape

The UK National Crime Agency says it has uncovered a "truly international network" of organised drug-facilitated sexual assault in which offenders sedated victims, raped or sexually assaulted them, and filmed the abuses. Since investigators began probing an online forum in October last year the NCA has identified more than 270 individuals linked to that forum and its successors. The agency has sent over 210 intelligence packages about suspects and potential victims to law enforcement partners, with more than 90 percent of those packages sent abroad; domestically the intelligence has spawned at least 14 investigations and eight victim-survivors have been safeguarded. Deputy director Nigel Leary said users discussed in graphic detail how to drug victims, which drugs or sedatives to use, how to administer them, and how to coordinate and film assaults, adding that many groups remain unidentified and offences are likely under-detected and under-reported. The NCA cited the Gisèle Pelicot case as an example; Pelicot’s ex-husband, Dominique Pelicot, was jailed for 20 years after 50 men were found guilty of rape or sexual offences in that case. Separately Europol said it worked with agencies from seven countries to identify 156 victims and perpetrators in an operation targeting drug-facilitated sexual assaults.
