Trump calls current US NATO support 'ridiculous' ahead of summit

President Donald Trump called it "ridiculous" for the United States to maintain its "one sided" relationship with NATO and said Washington's support "is not reciprocal," writing on Truth Social that "They were not there for us" over the Iran war. He posted a chart comparing NATO defence spending to argue the US invests far more than several allies, and he repeated that he wants Europe to assume primary responsibility for its own defence as Washington scales back commitments. Under pressure from Trump, NATO leaders agreed last year to target defence-related spending of 5% of GDP by 2035. The US secretary of state said Trump is disappointed that allies refused to become more actively involved in attacking Iran. Senator Marco Rubio said the rift will be discussed at the NATO summit in Ankara on 7 and 8 July, which will bring together all 32 member states. NATO was founded in 1949 as a US-led defence alliance credited with stabilising Europe during the Cold War and beyond, context officials say is informing talks at the Ankara meeting.

NATO is the most important military alliance in the totality of human history. Putin's top objective has been to smash it. Trump is his agent in this process.
