Trump calls current US NATO support 'ridiculous' ahead of summit

newsJul 3, 202620607

Donald Trump called it "ridiculous" for the United States to maintain its "one sided" relationship with NATO, posting on Truth Social that "They were not there for us!!!" and that Washington's ties with the alliance "is not reciprocal." His post included a chart comparing NATO defence spending that showed the US investing vastly more than several members, including the UK and France. Trump has repeatedly attacked European allies over their response to the war in Iran, and the US has already moved to scale back commitments while he presses Europe to take the lead on its own defence. Under pressure from Trump, NATO leaders agreed last year to aim for defence-related spending of 5% of GDP by 2035. The US secretary of state said Trump was disappointed that allies refused to become more actively involved in attacking Iran. Senator Marco Rubio said the rift would be discussed at the NATO summit in Ankara on 7 and 8 July, which will bring together 32 member states.
