Judge Ms Justice Smyth found Paul McIntyre, 58, Peter Cavanagh, 38, and Jordan Gareth Devine, 25, not guilty of the joint enterprise murder of journalist Lyra McKee in a non-jury trial at Belfast Crown Court. McKee, 29, was shot and killed on April 18, 2019, after being struck by a bullet while observing disturbances near police vehicles in the Creggan area of Derry. The prosecution said the three men had accompanied a lone gunman that night and encouraged or assisted him, while the New IRA claimed responsibility for McKee’s death. Defence barristers criticised the quality of the case, which was described in court as almost entirely circumstantial. Ms Justice Smyth is continuing to deliver judgment on other charges in the long-running trial.
