President's message and local leaders sent Fourth of July greetings as the United States marks its 250th Independence Day. Andy Fifer wrote, "we’re celebrating 250 years of our great nation," urged remembering "life, liberty, and justice for everyone," and noted gratitude for his Irish and German ancestors who built lives here. The City of Rochester published an advance notice about adjusted services and closures for the holiday. Major public events were scheduled nationwide, including fireworks at Mount Rushmore and performances at the U.S. Capitol, along with smaller community events such as a frog-jumping contest in Missouri and celebrations in Times Square. NBC News reported a Montana tribe held a ceremony for its buffalo as part of America 250 observances. Hundreds of activists and community members announced plans to refuse participation in America 250 and to hold protests in major cities to denounce the country’s violent legacy and current leadership.
