A new trailer for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has debuted for the director’s big-budget adaptation of Homer’s epic. Nolan adapted the nearly 3,000-year-old poem after Oppenheimer and assembled a large ensemble that includes Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Tom Holland, Lupita Nyong’o, Mia Goth, Samantha Morton and Benny Safdie. The film is Nolan’s largest production at an estimated $250 million, shot entirely on the extra-large IMAX format using about 2 million feet of film and relying on practical sets and props such as a Trojan horse and Odysseus’s ship rather than green-screen visual effects. Nolan told the New York Times he chose the Odyssey to challenge himself with a different type of storytelling, and Cambridge classics scholar Mary Beard urged audiences to consider the poem’s modern questions about home and the effects of war. Screen International’s Wendy Mitchell defended Nolan’s expensive techniques, saying he has earned large budgets because he delivers big audiences. Early reactions cited in press and interviews highlighted standout performances, including praise for Samantha Morton’s Circe, and outlets are predicting the film will be a major summer box-office draw.
