Christopher Nolan’s trailer for The Odyssey has debuted as outlets are predicting the film will be one of this summer’s biggest draws. Nolan adapts Homer’s Odyssey in a $250 million production that he filmed entirely on extra-large IMAX using roughly 2 million feet of film and minimal green-screen effects. The ensemble cast includes Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Tom Holland, Lupita Nyong’o, Mia Goth, Samantha Morton and Benny Safdie. Nolan said he chose the project to challenge himself with a different type of storytelling and to “move in impulsive ways,” while Cambridge classicist Mary Beard called attention to the poem’s modern questions about home and the effects of war. Nolan built large practical sets and props, including a Trojan horse and Odysseus’s ship, and Screen International’s Wendy Mitchell argued Nolan’s box-office track record justifies the costly, in-camera approach. Several press-junket items and posts note the film’s R rating for violence and language and report strong early praise for cast performances, positioning The Odyssey as a major awards and summer-box-office contender following Oppenheimer.
