Flames erupted on the Brooklyn Bridge during Macy's July 4 fireworks show over the East River, shortly after 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, with visible smoke and fire on the Manhattan-bound side as pyrotechnics were launched from the span. Video and witnesses showed multiple small sections burning while fireworks burst around them; Nearing Khoula said she first thought it was part of the show and then became frightened, and Mohamed Shaban said the fire started small and got bigger with heavy black smoke. A New York City police spokesperson said the blaze was "very likely" caused by the Macy's fireworks and reported no injuries at the time. A source familiar with the response said the "minor" blazes burned on platforms installed to launch the fireworks, not on the bridge structure itself, and that the 143-year-old bridge remains safe and structurally sound. A Post reporter observed the fires burn out after about a minute. The FDNY extinguished the flames using two engines and crews were on the scene.
