Folarin Balogun available for USMNT vs Belgium after ban suspended

FIFA suspended Folarin Balogun’s one-game red-card ban, making the 25-year-old striker eligible for the U.S. men’s World Cup round-of-16 match against Belgium at Lumen Field on Monday, FIFA confirmed. Balogun received a straight red against Bosnia and Herzegovina for a foul on defender Tarik Muharemovic, a send-off that automatically carries a one-game suspension under Article 10.5 of the tournament rules. FIFA said it was applying Article 27 of its disciplinary code to suspend implementation of the match suspension for a one-year probationary period and warned that a similar future infringement would revoke the suspension and trigger enforcement. The Athletic first reported the development and FIFA issued the confirmation after that report. U.S. players learned of the decision on the team bus; Christian Pulisic said the news “gives us a boost,” Chris Richards said the squad saw it on social media and described Balogun’s reaction as “Lit.” U.S. Soccer said it “accepted” and was “pleased” with the decision. Balogun has started all but one game at the tournament, scored twice in the opener against Paraguay, and scored in the first half of the 2-0 win over Bosnia, recording at least one goal contribution in every World Cup match he has played so far.

As huge and unpopular a call as it would be, the USA should leave Folarin Balogun on the bench for the entire Belgium game to avoid being tainted by any sort of association with Trump and Fifa's chicanery and machiavellianism.
