Erling Haaland scored a second-half brace as Norway beat Brazil 2-1, eliminating the Selecao and taking Haaland to seven World Cup goals. That tally puts Haaland level with Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé at the top of the 2026 Golden Boot standings. Norway’s victory was described as historic for the Scandinavians and ended Brazil’s run at the tournament. Messi and Mbappé have been central to the race after previous tournaments: Messi reached seven goals in 2022 but lost the Golden Boot to Mbappé’s eight that year, and Jairzinho also scored seven in Brazil’s 1970 title run. The Guardian notes the 2026 field already contains unusually high individual tallies and says the men’s World Cup scoring record may be in play this summer, keeping the Golden Boot race wide open as the knockout rounds continue.
