Graham Platner says he's 'reflecting' on Maine Senate bid after assault allegation

politicsJul 6, 202613820,588

Maine Democratic Senate nominee Graham Platner said he is “taking time to reflect on the best path forward” after Politico published an allegation that a former girlfriend, Jenny Racicot, 41, told the outlet Platner showed up drunk at her home in 2021 and forced himself on her. Platner released a video and a statement calling the accusation “categorically false,” saying any accusation of non-consensual behavior is untrue and that the report is part of a coordinated smear by out-of-state operatives. Platner’s campaign said the timing matters because Maine law gives candidates until July 13 to withdraw and Platner won the June 9 Democratic primary with more than 70 percent of the vote. The allegation was first reported by Politico after NBC News and others had documented other women’s accounts; Racicot previously spoke to the New York Times about unsettling behavior she observed while dating Platner between 2019 and 2021. Several Democratic figures and groups publicly called for Platner to withdraw, and some key endorsers began rescinding support, raising questions about whether the party will replace him before the July 13 deadline. Platner canceled multiple public events over the weekend as the campaign weighed next steps.

ELIZABETH WARREN calls on Platner to drop out: “There can be no tolerance for sexual assault… With so much at stake, the best path forward is for Graham Platner to step aside as the Democratic nominee and address these serious allegations outside this Senate race.”

Well, she blew her first chance at it and she should still be embarrassed about that but at least she got this part.

She endorsed him 2 days after the primary ad about his rape apologia comments.

Keira Havens14

OK look. Congrats on bailing on the sinking ship I guess. Pretty unhappy one of the most powerful people in the world is backtracking on their preferred choice of colleague via breakup text. Y'all better pass a version of Massie's sunlight bill exposing sexual harassment payoffs real quick.

She waited to see which way the wind was blowing

Substituting "antisemitic expression" and "racism and misogyny" on each of these statements to see how they would have read "There can be no tolerance for antisemitic expression..." "There can be no tolerance for racism and misogyny..." Solid work; perhaps Warren could have said this sooner!

liz warren rejecting the gambler's fallacy is a good start and she should keep going about it

Steven Santos6

Extremely disappointed that Warren endorsed him to begin with. Bernie still remains silent.

Mary Pezzulo6

I like Warren. I voted for her in the 2020 primary. She needs to go further than this and apologize for endorsing him when he was already obviously a hot mess.

After Susan Collins votes to confirm Nick Fuentes to the Supreme Court this is going to make for an awesome one of those yellow set-aside boxes in the AP US History textbooks of the future. "Many thought the Republic might be saved as late as 2026 but the Sensible Moderate Center had other plans"

Ari Ofsevit5

If only some of us had called her office and told her this a couple of months ago she could have avoided this egg on her face.

Assuming he is dropping out, which I believe is imminent, whoever replaces Platner in the Maine Senate race is going to need a fuckton of our help. We can flip that seat! We HAVE to!

If only there were glaring red flags attached to screaming sirens affixed to a Mercedes-Benz 770 with a swastika emblazoned on the hood before this particular revelation came out

✨queer commie terrorist✨43

fuck all of you who went to bat for him in the first place (including you @governorwalz.mn.gov) *after* a ridiculous amount of red flags started popping up the majority of you weird dorks have the political instincts of an overly forward hedgehog

Zach Hazard Vaupen37

As if this doesn’t fall perfectly in line with him being a neo-Nazi ex-military contractor. Who could have guessed??

Nicole Votes Becerra14

FUCK ALL OF THEM. All the red flags and they waved them away because he looked and sounded like their mythical ideation of a WHITE working class man. He was made up by Bernie and his followers.

Captain Murphy13

I did NAZI that coming!

Suzanne 🇵🇸 she/her12

The nazi thing was fine, tho, and not at all an indication that he has issues.

Holly Green11

This entire fiasco was avoidable! Where there's smoke there's fire, not...a newly put-out fire

Jennifer9

Imagine if these democrats hadn’t endorsed this man after the first 20 red flags, but instead pulled the Maine dems aside and said THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING???? But of course they wouldn’t have done that because white men in flannel shirts are the only people in the electorate who matter.

Leader Won’t Draw8

Feels like there was a time before now to do this

Man, Bernie really fucking sucks at reading people.

Politico reports a woman, Jenny Racicot, alleges Maine Senate nominee Graham Platner raped her in 2021. He denies it as “categorically false” and politically motivated, and is weighing his campaign’s future. True…or false, my guess is…he’s probably done.

jfc this is the worst possible take on Graham Platner

Cenk Uygur: "This is what I know for sure about Platner - every legacy media outlet is trying their hardest to make sure he loses. They are investigating every minute and every facet of his life. They never do this for insiders. They despise outsiders who challenge power.

The minute a candidate says he's not going to listen to the donors, especially AIPAC, he is set upon 24/7 by people posing as reporters. They are the attack dogs of the wealthy and powerful people who run this country - and they hate it when their orders are not follwoed.

So, no, I don't believe any mainstream media story. I think they are agents of propganda and not real news. And to my knowledge, they haven't investigated a single component of Susan Collins very long and very corrupt life. Because that's precisely the type of corruption that national media loves and wants you to think is normal."
