US airman tried by US court martial over Cambridgeshire indecent‑exposure case

newsJul 7, 202625203

Hannes Marschalek, a 37-year-old US airman based at RAF Lakenheath, was tried by the US military after Cambridgeshire police handed their 2022 investigation to US authorities following an official American request. Police had arrested Marschalek on 9 October 2022 after complaints that he indecently exposed himself to a 16-year-old girl and three other women, aged up to 24, outside his home in Littleport; witnesses described him standing at the open doorway with his penis exposed and holding a mobile phone. Three weeks after his arrest the force agreed to cede the probe; military prosecutors say text messages in which Marschalek boasted “I definitely just flashed a couple ladies walking from the train. LOL” showed repeated offending. Marschalek, a staff sergeant, pleaded guilty as part of a negotiated deal at a 2023 court martial on the base, but this year a US military court quashed his conviction on technical grounds. Military lawyers for Marschalek denied he was a “serial flasher.” The case echoes the trial of Capt Jacob Wulfson and has prompted criticism because the incidents occurred on British soil while the servicemen were off duty, situations in which UK authorities should have primary jurisdiction.
