ICE officer fatally shoots Mexican man in Houston during traffic stop

newsJul 7, 2026282,344

An ICE officer fatally shot Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston during an attempted traffic-stop immigration arrest, DHS said. Federal authorities say the shooting occurred Tuesday and ICE characterized the driver as having tried to run over an agent. The death appears to be the first deadly shooting by federal immigration officers since the January Minneapolis killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti. The FBI has opened an investigation, and local activists and organizations including LULAC have publicly rejected ICE’s account and demanded transparency. Family members and witnesses have been cited in reporting as present at the scene, and Harris County officials have issued statements calling for more information. Protests and public demonstrations were organized in Houston in response to the shooting.
