Poll: Half of Americans struggle to afford groceries and gas

newsJul 7, 2026221,414

An exclusive Harris Poll for the Guardian finds about half of Americans say they are having trouble affording everyday necessities such as groceries and gas, and 95% say the US is suffering an affordability crisis. About 57% of respondents say the overall economy is getting worse, up from 46% in February, while those who say the economy is getting better fell to 16% from 28% in February. The slide in sentiment coincides with the war in Iran and higher pump prices after that conflict, even as employment and stock markets remain stable. The affordability struggle crosses party lines: roughly half of Democrats, Republicans and independents report trouble affording groceries and gas. Two thirds of respondents say they have little faith the federal government will improve the cost-of-living crisis, including 49% of Republicans. Republican optimism has fallen sharply since February: 49% of Republicans then said the economy was getting better versus 27% now, and 38% now say it is getting worse versus 22% in February. Pollsters and the Guardian warn the cratering economic sentiment could complicate Republicans' efforts to hold a narrow congressional majority in the upcoming midterm elections.
