Poll: Half of Americans struggle to afford groceries and gas

newsJul 7, 202615307

A Harris Poll conducted for the Guardian finds about half of Americans say they are having trouble affording everyday necessities such as groceries and gas, and 95% say the US is suffering an affordability crisis. About 57% of respondents said the overall economy is getting worse, up from 46% in February, while those who say the economy is getting better fell to 16% from 28% in February. The shift follows the war in Iran and rising pump prices; Brent crude has fallen since a June US Iran peace deal but US gas prices have been slow to return to prewar levels. The affordability strain crosses party lines: roughly half of Democrats, Republicans and independents report trouble affording basics, and two thirds of Americans, including 49% of Republicans, have little faith the federal government will improve the cost of living. Republican optimism has weakened sharply, with the share saying the economy is getting better dropping from 49% in February to 27% now, and rural Americans are especially pessimistic, with 64% saying the economy is getting worse. Among independents who see an affordability crisis, 54% say neither party has a solution, a dynamic that the Guardian says could hurt Republicans as they try to retain narrow control of Congress ahead of the midterm elections.
