I think a lot of the 'maybe some totally repellent in Clacton unity candidate can win' stuff on here is ignoring the bigger point, which is, as Twll says here, Farage thinks that 'well, if the voters of Clacton don't care about my five million, why should you?' is a winning argument anywhere else.

Paul Convery1Remember, no MP can actually resign. It’s the law. A quaint mechanism is to apply for a nominal office of profit under the Crown. That triggers a disqualification. That office is granted by the Chancellor of the Exchequer. She could say no.

Labour faces a conundrum over Clacton - Burnham is set on a summer where the prevailing story is the change he is bringing to the country - an August with full government grid and face time with the electorate. Many want to marginalise the Farage by-election as much as possible.
