Rosebank oil field would emit 254 million tonnes CO2, researchers warn

Researchers warn the Rosebank oil field west of Shetland would release about 254 million tonnes of carbon dioxide if its oil and gas were extracted and burned, roughly 70% of the UK’s annual emissions. The warning appears as the industry regulator is reconsidering revised applications for Jackdaw and Adura’s Rosebank after a court ruled earlier approvals unlawful. Adura is party to the Rosebank project through a joint venture and is simultaneously pressing the government to approve nearby Jackdaw to avoid winter gas shortages, with CEO Neil McCulloch saying Jackdaw could meet 6% of UK gas needs from 1 October. Environmental campaigners have pointed to recent record-breaking heatwaves when arguing against new fields. The regulator’s and government’s forthcoming decisions will determine whether Rosebank proceeds and thus whether the projected 254 million tonnes of CO2 would be emitted.
