Apple sues OpenAI alleging trade secret theft

techJul 10, 2026311,761

Apple on Friday sued OpenAI in federal court in Northern California, accusing the AI lab and two former Apple employees of stealing iPhone hardware trade secrets to build competing consumer hardware. The complaint names OpenAI Chief Hardware Officer Tang Tan, a former Apple vice president, and ex-employee Chang Liu, and alleges a coordinated campaign in which OpenAI directed job candidates to bring "actual parts" from Apple for interview "show and tell" sessions and coached departing employees to evade Apple security; Apple says Liu stole an Apple laptop. The suit notes the companies struck a high-profile partnership in 2024 when ChatGPT was integrated into the iPhone operating system and Sam Altman visited Apple headquarters, but relations cooled after OpenAI announced a hardware push and acquired IO Products for $6.4 billion. Apple also alleges OpenAI asked hardware partners to perform a metal finishing technique Apple invented while implying Apple had authorized it. OpenAI said it has no interest in other companies' trade secrets and is focused on building technology; Apple is seeking damages, injunctions, and an order forcing OpenAI to stop using its trade secrets. Apple did not say whether the lawsuit will affect the ChatGPT integration in Apple Intelligence, and the complaint arrives as OpenAI faces other legal and regulatory pressures ahead of a potential IPO.

Sam Altman's going to end up in jail. It won't be this year or next, but the man is a federal prisoner waiting to happen one day.
