Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey premieres in Mumbai
In @nytopinion.nytimes.com By casting Lupita N’yongo as Helen of Troy in his new film, “The Odyssey,” Christopher Nolan “is using Helen just as the Greek authors did: to provoke, challenge and discomfit how we think about beauty and identity,” Daniel Mendelsohn writes.
Uh huh. Challenge our notions of beauty by casting the objectively most beautiful woman in the world. Really pushing the boundaries there.
Ms. N’yongo is an extraordinarily beautiful woman. There’s absolutely nothing “discomfiting” about her. Dumb thesis.
She could launch a few thousand ships.
Lupita is very Beautiful .
This is fiction, based on mythology right? That director can cast whoever he wants. Don’t like it, don’t watch it. Geezy.
Cleopatra was a Macedonian Greek monarch ruling a Hellenistic kingdom, and Helen of Troy was a legendary Greek figure defined by fair skin and golden hair.
How we think about beauty? She's Top 10 most beautiful women in the world. I ain't rethinkin nuthin.
Look, she's got hormonally imbalanced men who think with their dicks willing to go to war over her looks. I'd say she's cast perfectly as Helen of Troy.
Is this opinion piece doing a “hear me out” on Lupita N’yongo????
It’s also funny that about 70% of all the online dorks who are pissing blood about THE ODYSSEY are spurned Nolan lovers who based their personality in important stages of their development around Heath Ledger as The Joker
If he had cast two random white women instead of Lupita Nyong'o and Zendaya almost none of those people would have any opinion whatsoever about this movie
I remember when he announced Heath Ledger cast as Joker. And people didn’t like that. They knew him from Brokeback Mountain and A Knights Tale. They didn’t think he could be Joker. Then they shut up and embraced him as their ideal of masculinity after the movie came out. Because they suck.
One of the things that annoys me about The Discourse surrounding the upcoming release of Nolan's adaptation of The Odyssey is the complaint from Chudsville that Nolan should have "cast actual Greek people to play Greek characters."
This is of course an attempt to sound not-racist while being horrifically racist, but some of the Chudsvillians would really like be respectable, but we are not bound to respect them here.
My complaint is way more basic, that one of the most complex and interesting characters in the whole of western literature is being played by Matt Damon. Oh and the clothing is all wrong but, that aside, I'm sure it'll only be averagely shit.
