E. Jean Carroll has received $5.62 million that President Donald Trump owed her under a 2023 jury verdict finding him liable for sexual abuse and defamation. The U.S. District Court in lower Manhattan posted a docket notice saying the total amount was disbursed to Carroll’s attorney Roberta Kaplan’s law firm on July 9. Kaplan said, “Three years ago, a unanimous nine-person jury found President Trump liable for sexually assaulting and defaming E. Jean Carroll,” and that Carroll has now received the damages payment the jury awarded. Carroll accused Trump of assaulting her in a Manhattan department store dressing room in 1996; Trump has said he never met Carroll and has denied the allegation. Trump sought to pause the payment in a petition to the Supreme Court earlier this month, but the high court unanimously denied that request, after which Carroll’s attorneys asked a federal court to release the funds. The payout resolves the damages award from Carroll’s first successful lawsuit against Trump that went to verdict in 2023; The Hill reported it had reached out to Trump’s lawyers for comment.
