House passes Sunshine Protection Act to make DST permanent
Wow. The House has *passed* the Trump-backed plan for year-round daylight saving time. States would be able to opt out. The bill heads to the Senate. This is a huge development for those of us on the sunshine policy beat. with the great @annalissroy.bsky.social
Some important context here - Congress fifty years ago passed a similar plan for permanent daylight saving time. It backfired; voters got angry and it was swiftly repealed - The politics of this issue are weird and more about geography than party. Tom Cotton, a Trump ally, has vowed to stop it.
Standard time is better aligned with your circadian cycles: bright light in the morning to wake, dim light in the evening for better sleep. Do your own research, a simple search reveals 20 reports in favor of standard time, none for the so-called daylight saving time www.ama-assn.org/public-healt...
Noooooo... I live in central Kentucky and the sun already comes up around 8 am in the winter. I don't want to send my kids to school an hour before sunrise.
Its stupid, was stupid in the past, still stupid now.
It’s been tried already. Was wildly unpopular. www.popsci.com/science/perm...
Daylight Savings Time is stupid. Of course our mad king supports it.
“States would be able to opt out” - folks can’t handle current time zones, how on earth will they figure this shit out?
New discourse topic just dropped
Ugh. Of course they did.
👎 I, for one, would not like the sun to rise at *8:27 a.m.* in the dead of winter here in DC.
I hope this shit doesn't pass daylight savings time is the worst
Good, but if states can opt out, that seems like a recipe for widespread confusion As for Trump’s support, if you have a horse loose in a hospital, it’s probably going to accidentally do something useful like kill some ants or scare away some especially annoying patients or allow year round DST
The House is scheduled to consider & vote on H.R. 139, the Sunshine Protection Act of 2025, this week. The Rules Committee met on July 13 to prepare the rule for the bill's consideration. This bill seeks to make DST permanent year-round, which would end the twice-annual practice of changing clocks.
Picking one and sticking with it is certainly more intelligent. I'd rather it were permanent standard time, but this would be better than the current nonsense.
Sigh. I hope one day people realize the real issue is the outdated 8 hour workday taking up too much of our lives. A 6 hour work day would give us back an extra hour on both ends of the day. For now I'll settle for people hating it almost immediately and undoing it, like last time they tried it.
Yuck. I live far enough north that this would mean 9 am sunrises in the winter. Standardize on Standard Time, for biology’s sake!
People do not look at the science, do they? Staying on DST is not the the answer.
And it passed the House
What is the point? Why not just natural time? If you'll lose whatever supposed benefit DST gives you if you go year around with it, you lose the exact same amount of benefit if you go with noon being when the sun is highest in the sky. Is it a religious thing? Or are they all just that stupid?
The US House of Representatives has voted to make daylight saving time permanent (308-117). The Sunshine Protection Act now goes to the Senate for consideration.
"sunshine protection act" has to be the worst fucking name for this
The most important issue in the United States, now! How did they know?
JUST SO WE STOP MESSING WITH DOG FEEDING TIMES. LET'S GOOOooooo
where it will likely die...
Ohh, the most useless Congress might get something done.
Hey soooo people can’t afford to live
please finally make this happen. I don’t care if it’s standard or dst, just pick one
(1) Stupid name (2) WHY?? No one wants this!!
I wonder which way Miss ladybugs would have voted on this
this sounds about as real as Boaty McBoatface did back in the day except WE HAVE REAL FUCKING ISSUES IN THIS COUNTRY AND THE HOUSE IS FOCUSED ON DST. Every politician in the house is a fucking JOKE.
people are dying, but yeah, sure
They Do This EVERY Year And It Changed Yet.
The House voted to end Americans’ practice of switching their clocks twice per year, a win for President Donald Trump, who has called for permanent daylight saving time over the objections of medical groups and lawmakers who represent Midwestern states.
Except this time shift is not the one we want. This is the one business owners want.
Golf courses…trump’s only reason for getting involved. Gosh, isn’t it great having a president who focuses on the really important things that affect us all in our everyday lives?!🙄
It'd be good for my carriers, who'd have an extra hour of daylight to deliver mail in the winter. But sending kids out to catch the bus in pitch blackness seems dumb.
Well, in the winter I'll be walking under a dangerous underpass in the dark to get to work. Bye, I guess.
⏰ House PASSES Trump-backed plan to end switching clocks twice a year, 308-117 w/bipartisan support. If passed by Senate (TBD), will make daylight saving time permanent in most of the country. @ddiamond.bsky.social www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...
Wrong way. Standard time should be permanent.
This is so fucking stupid. Yet again, a problem we solved decades ago comes back because morons refuse to acknowledge history or use their brains
According to this new plan, the sun will rise at 8:15 in NYC and 9:05 in northern Minnesota.
I think this is better for most people but in rural areas many kids still ride the bus. So, thousands of kids will be standing at the end of a half mile long driveway in the pitch black waiting on the bus. Humans, bears and snakes are all a threat in the country.
We already tried this in 1974. It started out popular, then crashed and burned when kids started dying while waiting for buses in the dark. www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/w...
I like it but we're about to find out how people feel about dark winters
Gonna be swell for those kids lining up for their school buses in the darkness in the winter months
Once again: we did this in the 70s and everybody hated it. This gets mentioned all the time and somehow piles of dummies just pretend we didn’t learn something.
Just pick one, man, I don’t care which. It’s all made up anyway
Hey, they can do something useful!
The U.S. House of Representatives is expected to vote on legislation Monday, July 13, that could make daylight saving time a thing of the past, possibly ending the twice-yearly ritual of the hours "springing forward" and "falling back." www.usatoday.com/story/news/n...
They want to make it permanent.
The time change is dumb. Half people want it one way, the other half want the other. Good to end it. Despite there being a million other more important things, we can't expect this govt to actually achieve more than 1 in a million
I'm thinking this is the least important of our concerns in the list of concerns. Cripes. Jesus, take the wheel.
Please god yes! The cost to business -imagine you’re a hospital with people working 24/7 and you have to make sure people get paid for an hour that disappears from the clock. Plus imagine acutely ill people’s medical records like vital signs.
This headline and cutline are dead wrong. It's Standard Time they're voting to end. Daylight Savings year round. Idiotic.
