The Detroit Red Wings announced that Steve Yzerman is stepping down as Executive Vice President and General Manager and will transition to senior advisor to Governor and CEO Chris Ilitch as the team begins a search for a new head of hockey operations. Yzerman will remain in his current role to handle day-to-day hockey operations and will serve on the search committee, which will be led by Ilitch and include Ilitch Sports + Entertainment President and CEO Ryan Gustafson and other leaders; both internal and external candidates will be considered. "We are thankful for Steve’s hard work and dedication as General Manager," Ilitch said, while also adding, "Clearly, we are not where we and our fans expect to be as an organization." Yzerman said he is "extremely proud to remain part of this great franchise" and pledged to support the organization in whatever role is needed. Yzerman spent 22 seasons as a player in Detroit, captained the team for two decades, retired in 2006 with 692 goals, 1,755 points and three Stanley Cups, and is one of nine Red Wings with a retired number; he served as Red Wings Vice President of Hockey Operations from 2006 to 2010, was Tampa Bay’s executive from 2010 to 2019 when the Lightning won Stanley Cups in 2020 and 2021, and returned to Detroit in 2019 as the franchise’s 11th general manager.
