GEO Group employee arrested after Aurora protest shooting

Brandon Booth, 42, a GEO Group employee, was arrested after firing a single shot at two women outside the Aurora ICE detention center Thursday night, police said. Investigators say the women had blocked Booth’s vehicle and taken pictures of staff vehicles before walking away; Booth then retrieved a personally owned pistol and shot, striking one woman in the lower body. The injured woman has not been identified and sustained injuries not considered life-threatening, according to an Aurora Police Department spokeswoman. Booth fled briefly but was stopped a short distance away and detained, the department said in a news release. Aurora Chief of Police Todd Chamberlain called the incident "a tragedy on all fronts" and pledged a transparent investigation. The shooting comes as the facility faces protests and scrutiny after refusing state and local health officials access to investigate a recent tuberculosis case; Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser said his office is ready to work with state health officials and the governor to bring GEO into compliance. Immigrant rights organizers in Aurora said they will continue protests, and activists nationwide had planned a national day of action this weekend.
