James Cameron's Aliens turns 40
James Cameron's Aliens was released 40 years ago today. 40 years of Burke.
All the people in the news you don't like had a poster of Burke in their room.
Me every time I wake up and open social media for the first time that day (Present company excluded of course)
I couldn't open a closet door for about two months after watching it as a nine year old.
Paul Reiser was so slimy as Burke that to this day I can’t accept that he was a sitcom dad on My Two Dads or even as a romantic lead on Mad About You. #Aliens
Still my favourite movie… ever. Nothing has come close since. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #FiveStar #SciFi
Aliens still stands up well today. The story, script and acting are first rate in any case - but the effects haven’t aged much. Still very watchable. Still the most badass female lead in movie history.
Aliens is 40. Art by James Cameron:
In 2017, I wrote an essay about how Paul Reiser's performance on s2 of Stranger Things was an exoneration of Burke (and his character in DINER, too) Reiser had his agent send me an email saying it had moved him deeply Wasn't my goal, but quite the message to receive Anyway: archive.is/C6zdO
🎶40 years of Burke Never stopped his scheming🎶
and we still haven’t been nuked from orbit. disappointing…
love that his parents cheered at his death when they saw it
Burke, as far as I know, is the first depiction of a finance bro wearing a gilet. The absolute worst.
This has been my favourite film for such a long time, and it still holds up.
Pardon me while I crumble into dust.
As it happens, I ripped this and uploaded it to my media server earlier this week. It would be rude not to.
Still stands up today as good as it ever was and arguably the greatest sci-fi movie ever made
ALIENS “Game over, man, game over!” “Get away from her, you bitch!” “They mostly come at night. Mostly.” Great quotes from one of the best sequels in movie history! James Cameron’s ALIENS, starring Sigourney Weaver, Michael Biehn, Lance Henricksen, Bill Paxton & more was released OTD 40 years ago.
Fun fact: Japanese don’t do plural so the title was ALIEN 2
Have you ever been mistaken for a man? No, have you?
"Alright, sweethearts! You heard the man and you know the drill! Assholes and elbows!"
I saw Aliens when it came out in 1986. At “Get away from her, you bitch!”, the theater cheered.
I believe it's the greatest film in the franchise, and I'll die on that hill.
"Yah, but it's a dry heat".
Aliens turns 40 today - one of the greatest sequels and sci-fi movies EVER #filmsky
Get away from her, you bitch
I watched this on its original cinema release, knew nothing about it and was absolutely blown away
The first one was great. is still great... wonderful... a female hero... the Giger buildings... awesome.
Its like me having a son. It couldn't possibly be a better sequel than me 🤟✌️
James Cameron doesn't get enough credit for designing the alien queen seamlessly with Giger's aesthetic
"I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure."
Did you know James Remar played Hicks when filming for Aliens started, but that a drug problem forced him to leave production so they brought in Michael Biehn to take over the role?
Picked it up on DVD recently, and watched the director's cut last night. I didn't realise I was doing it on the anniversary.
Guess that’s decided what I’m watching tonight
On the 40th anniversary of the release of Aliens, here is one of my most read, weirdly controversial pieces. www.rogerebert.com/mzs/watching...
Chaser to the shot: a photo of the lad that I supposedly corrupted with age-inappropriate movies, sitting with me and his sister at a 2023 Film Forum screening of Bernardo Bertolucci's R-rated The Conformist.
this is a great bit of writing. you're a good dad.
FWIW, I saw the first two Alien movies aged 11 (who didn‘t?!) and was so enthralled I just knew I wanted to work in film, and nothing else. I now work as a film editor, and these films definitely played a big part in that.
What a fantastic piece. Never read it in 2015, but I’m glad I’m catching it now. As the father of a 10-year-old boy and a big fan of the Alien franchise and this film in particular, I’m baffled by all the judgmental scolding the piece originally provoked. People need to chill and be more thoughtful.
Back when you wrote this, the controversy made me roll my eyes. Those people would have shit their pants over the stuff I saw IN THEATERS. DAWN OF THE DEAD at 9, ALIEN at 9, CARRIE at 7--hell, the first movie I ever saw was THE EXORCIST! (I was 16 when ALIENS opened) These are FAR worse than ALIENS.
If it balances things out at all, this reminds me of when a friend's conservative dad started fast-forwarding through parts of Tim Burton's BATMAN (which I had already seen in the theater with my father), and self-righteous 13 year-old me lectured the dad about the evils of censorship & stormed out.
This got me pretty good
Fun fact: My 11-year-old son loved The Odyssey and wants to see it again.
Tremendous piece of writing, capturing the experience of seeing something legendary for the first time and the way we process things and what it's like to trust young people & see something through their eyes. You don't have to agree with Matt's choice but it's worth reading & thinking about.
"I care more about the values expressed by the film and its characters than the content of the movie."
Matt’s a great dad, a great host and a great film critic, in that order.
The perfect age to watch Aliens, imho. What a lovely piece about youths being exposed to some damn fine movies.
I didn’t see this in theaters but we absolutely watched the shit out of this when it came to home video. We were in middle school.
In the Icelandic rpg-themed comedy Astropia, one of the characters opines that you must watch all the most traumatizing movies as a child, before you get jaded.
I first saw #Aliens in the late '80s with a gaggle of military folk on home video, and it was a LOT like this post about a room full of fifth-graders. Matt is right—you can't have a true "do-over" of your first viewing of any formative film, but it'd be fun to try. #movies #scifi #reviews
"Like the meme 'game over maaaaaaan' is from it" ❤️ Looking back, Aliens is PG-13 AT MOST (and not a horror film in any case) It's fucking good regardless.
Aliens was released 40 years ago today and I can't overestimate what this movie means to me. I wouldn't be in this business without it. To me, it's the perfect organism. Its structural perfection is matched only by its quotability. (yes, I've seen the director's cut. I prefer the theatrical release)
Normally I save my yearly watch for my bday but you know I gotta watch it today
I don’t give a flying fuck about the sentry guns and I thought I was the only one. I wish the theatrical cut had the stuff about Ripley’s daughter, but that aside, it’s my preferred cut too
Theatrical cut better and you’re right to say it.
incredible movie, one of my faves. Obv Sigourney and the writing, acting, ensemble, action, direction -- it's all is perfect, but Carrie Henn? So so so damn good. "...they mostly come at night -- mostly" a god-tier line reading. 🚀
Much as I appreciate the Director's Cut, I'm with you about the Theatrical-with one caveat. The scene of Ripley about to head out to get Newt, with the "Dwayne.. my name's Dwayne." "Ellen." "Don't be late, Ellen." I wish that was kept; it's a quiet human moment - right before EVERYTHNG GOES NUTS!
Theatrical is definitely better WITH THE EXCEPTION of the short scene that explains about Ripley having a daughter in the DC. :)
Released 40 years ago today, Aliens remains one of the rare sequels that equals, and for many surpasses, the original. It's been a huge influence on us over the years » tinyurl.com/4kudpr3v
Alien was a horror film, Aliens was an action film, and they're both great. I give the nod to Alien though, because Newt bugs the shit outta me.
Not for me, Alien is scarier and a better movie in my opinion.
Aliens was an awesome action film. Alien was a cultural phenomenon.
A very different genre from the first, switching from Haunted House to Sands of Iwo Jima - if you weren't expecting it, it was a shock.
Happy 40th to “Aliens,” the best flick James Cameron ever made.
“Aliens” and “T2” do this thing where the last 40-60 minutes can just be wall-to-wall action while also paying off story setups and closing character arcs. It looks like magic because he’s ruthless about cutting shit, even if he shot it with full intention to use.
Shut up I just saw a 30th anniversary screening in what feels like the last two or three years.
Aliens turns 40 today! Many people remember it as a sequel as good as its predecessor (for different reasons). But it's also noteworthy for the character who established the Pete Buttigieg-Sam Altman archetype.
40 years later and Aliens still looks amazing! Adore the film and once interviewed some of the cast.
And he's so well done in this, so instantly unlikeable and problematic in so little screen time - I didn't like him within the first minute of his first appearance onscreen and I doubt I'm alone in that.
He’s really an ok guy.
ALIENS was released 40 years ago today. I remember seeing it and being happy I wasn’t asked for my ID (I wasn’t quite 17 yet). My friends, the screams. And then, the cheers. When Ripley came out in the power loader, that audience EXPLODED. If it’s your fav Cameron, I won’t argue. Still GREAT.
I am currently watching it. The dropship just crashed. God, this movie's great. "Game over, man! Game over! What the fuck are we gonna do now?! What are we gonna do?!"
Still amazes me that one of the best action movies of all time was "Mothers protecting their children" and Hollywood in general was like "Clearly they want more monsters and manly space marine men." Watchmen and Dark Knight came out the same year and were also wildly misinterpreted!
I was too young. I saw it on a local Fox network in high school on a weekend afternoon right around the time Resurrection came out. Watching it in my movies anywhere account for it's 40th right now.
